Review of November show

December 5, 2008 by evagreen · Leave a Comment

The theme for our November show as dance from Hungary and we opened with a wonderful belly dance/gypsy peformance by Eva Green to an old  Hungarian song ‘ Two Guitars’.
At Silk Route we very rarely have students performing but Nancy’s Beginners and Intermediate students from Wimbledon looked a picture had a great reception as they danced a lively pop song  ‘El Layali by Nawal Zoughbi. RAZIA is fast becoming a favourite on the London Belly dance Scene, and she delighted the Silk route audience in Turkish Oriental style dance Sendur by Asena and then a tabla solo by Basssam Ayoub. Yuki and Nadia - from Japanese/Sri Lankan and Phillipines/Middle Eastern backgrounds showed what an exquisite combination they are in ‘Oul tani Kidda’ and then a fun drum solo. Regulars to Silk Route will know that we have been lucky enough to have Ewa Horsfield as our first artist in residence - her first gypsy inspired piece showed audience just why she is such an acclaimed dancer.
In her second  set, Razia’s grace and the soft feminity of her dancing was given the perfect foil in ‘Sea Breezes by Hamouda Ali before Eva Green returned this time with wonderful Canadian Tabla player, Tim Gerwing in a brilliant drum solo. Tim returns to Canada this month and Bellyworld would like to thank him for supporting us at Silk Route and we are looking forward to his return!
The ‘bellydance’ part of the show was brought to an end by the incomparable Ewa Horsfield in a sizzling Egyptian medley - thank you Ewa for being such a star !

The final set of the evening was given to the all female band Palinka, who brought their passion for Romanian, Gypsy and Hungarian folk dance from Transylvania and were ably accompanied by their dancer and also by the BALATON troupe in a wonderfully authentic series of dances. At the end of the show they managed to get the audience up for a little Hungarian spirited dancing.

Review of the October Show

October 28, 2008 by evagreen · Leave a Comment

Bellyworld’s second Silk Route event on Sunday 26th October highlighted the the drama of Flamenco and the beauty of belly dance in one wonderful show. Performers included dancers from Eva Green’s Dance Academy and, of course, our Artist in Residence, the fabulous Ewa Horsfield.
We were lucky enough to be joined by principle dancer with Viva Flamenco, Juani Garcia and her superb singer and guitarist Juan. They began the evening with a soulful Rumba followed by Tangos with Lisa joining Juani in a vibrant demonstration of the power Flamenco has to move and excite an audience.

Bellyworld’s Michelle and dance partner Ela then brought their specially choreographed Latino - Bellydance duet to the stage – gorgeously up-temp and colourful .

First soloist was EDIT, trained in Hungary now based in the UK. she delighted us with a very elegant Raqs Sharki and in second part of the programme, a gorgeous performance with Isis Wings.

Artist in Residence, Ewa Horsfield then treated the audience with a stunning Drum Solo and later joined joined Tabla player Tim Gerwing; he began his set with in ‘Night in Tunisia’ and then treated us to a mini- master class in Arabic rhythms as Ewa and Edit performed with him.

Elisa gave a beautifully evocative performance dancing to ’Ya Msafer Whedek ‘ by Mohammed Abd Elwahab

Nancy dancing to Natacha Atlas’s version of the classic ‘Whatever Lola Wants’ was sizzlingly sensous.

Ewa Horsfield showed why she is so in demand as a performer and teacher in her fabulous stick dance to Bole 2 Harlem, a modern Ethiopian song

Viva Flamenco’s finale was a wonderful BULERIAS with Juani joined by Lisa and accompanied by Juan and then finished with a gorgeous Rumba and encore by Juan with Palmas by Lisa and Juani …. We ended as we began on a very high note!

Show Review

The first of Bellyworld’s SILK ROUTE events got off to a flying start on Sunday 28th September 2008

The ‘highlighted’ dance genre was BHANGRA and we were lucky enough to have the dancers and musicians from the BHANGRA BAHARAN PANJAB or ‘Seasons of Panjab’ troupe

Dancers Kuldip and Joyti opened the show in gloriously energetic yet delicate style in two gorgeous Panjabi songs

SAJIDA then took the floor in a wonderfully sensuous rendition of MEHBOOBA or ‘Beloved’ from the hit Bollywood film SHOLAY

The incomparable Ewa Horsfield moved us effortlessly from India to Egypt with the first of two dances in her delectable style

Bellyworld’s Nancy and Michelle performed an irresistibly upbeat Khaleegy ‘Sahran Maaki’ with much hair-tossing!

ESZTER then gave us a delicious classic BELEDI number ‘Tahta as Shoubak’ before Julie and Elif of SAMSARA delighted the audience with their Indian Fusion and stunning drum solo

It was then turn for the other member of the Bellyworld trio to wow the audience with her musicality and fine stick work as Eva Green danced to ‘Lubna’

Sajida returned with a delightfully cheeky Bhangra piece before Ewa Horsfield brought the house down with a sizzling folk drum solo ‘Hagalla’

At that point we thought we had better bring the boys on! The whole BHANGRA BAHARAN PANJAB troupe took the place by storm in a wonderful energetic and colourful finale

Thank you to all of our performers for a wonderful show!
