Bellyworld’s second Silk Route event on Sunday 26th October highlighted the the drama of Flamenco and the beauty of belly dance in one wonderful show. Performers included dancers from Eva Green’s Dance Academy and, of course, our Artist in Residence, the fabulous Ewa Horsfield.
We were lucky enough to be joined by principle dancer with Viva Flamenco, Juani Garcia and her superb singer and guitarist Juan. They began the evening with a soulful Rumba followed by Tangos with Lisa joining Juani in a vibrant demonstration of the power Flamenco has to move and excite an audience.
Bellyworld’s Michelle and dance partner Ela then brought their specially choreographed Latino - Bellydance duet to the stage – gorgeously up-temp and colourful .
First soloist was EDIT, trained in Hungary now based in the UK. she delighted us with a very elegant Raqs Sharki and in second part of the programme, a gorgeous performance with Isis Wings.
Artist in Residence, Ewa Horsfield then treated the audience with a stunning Drum Solo and later joined joined Tabla player Tim Gerwing; he began his set with in ‘Night in Tunisia’ and then treated us to a mini- master class in Arabic rhythms as Ewa and Edit performed with him.
Elisa gave a beautifully evocative performance dancing to ’Ya Msafer Whedek ‘ by Mohammed Abd Elwahab
Nancy dancing to Natacha Atlas’s version of the classic ‘Whatever Lola Wants’ was sizzlingly sensous.
Ewa Horsfield showed why she is so in demand as a performer and teacher in her fabulous stick dance to Bole 2 Harlem, a modern Ethiopian song
Viva Flamenco’s finale was a wonderful BULERIAS with Juani joined by Lisa and accompanied by Juan and then finished with a gorgeous Rumba and encore by Juan with Palmas by Lisa and Juani …. We ended as we began on a very high note!
